As a scholar, ergonomics and chromatics were my fields of expertise, and I’ve spent my entire research career without a rose in my life. I was actually not a big fan of roses being so fragrant, and preferred the sweet and gentle scent of peonies or sandalwoods. However, being involved in the university’s project to produce hand lotion, I was introduced to rose water. In the process of researching rose water, I took a walk through Suma Rikyu Park, where 1,800 varieties of roses were in full bloom. The sweet, soft, and fresh scent of roses swift in the air even before the roses came into sight. It was different from the rose fragrance that I thought I knew, something far different from what you find in a flower shop. This was my first encounter with the damask rose. I still remember the shock, and that it completely changed my mind about roses. At that time, the world was in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic. Unable to go to school and continue any kind of research, I decided to study more on rose water. Since my scholastic emphasis was ergonomics, I asked myself, “What effect do roses have on humans?” As I started experimenting with that question in mind, I found that it had surprising effects. Compared to essential oils, rose water has been found to have benefits like regulating hormonal balance and reducing anxiety. It also tastes great in drinks, and helps moisturize the skin. It has also been found that among the many types of roses, damask rose has by far the greatest number of such effects. Now completely fascinated by roses, I began to further investigate distillation in order to make better rose water. Distillation methods range from easy DIY with what you can find in a kitchen, to those that are more like scientific experiments. We realized that if we could distill without adding water and with as little heat as possible, we could extract the pure fragrance of the rose itself, and could even obtain dried roses in its best condition. This is how we landed on the ultimate rose bio-water and bio-powder. In the course of our research, I was able to find a rare rose farm that was pesticide-free. The fragrance of rose water distilled from Japanese damask roses is as strong as that of rose water from imported Bulgarian roses, but a softer and more gentle smell. I was fascinated by this fragrance and before I knew it, I wanted to help this rose farm by delivering the scent of their roses to a bigger public. Though I had no connections with roses, I found myself fascinated by them before I knew it. Now I would like to share this wonderful energy of Japan-grown roses with as many people as possible, and offer suggestions that will help find a peace of mind and body in our daily lives.
